How Does Metamucil Help in Lowering Cholesterol

If you are regular user of metamucil my first guess would be that you are most likely suffering from chronic constipation.  However if you belong to "another" group of people which uses metamucil, then my guess would be wrong.  The second group of people I am taking about is those who take metamucil for controlling their cholesterol level.  Which of the above groups do you belong to?

If you belong to the first group and wondering why I am talking about reducing cholesterol levels with metamucil let me try to explain how that happens.  This may be one of the most important health information you are about to read.  I will try to explain this concept in a simple manner so that you can understand it easily.

How Metamucil Can Help Lower Your Cholesterol Levels

Basic Understanding About Cholesterol

The most common reason people use metamucil is for relieving constipation.  However not many people may be aware that a section of users actually use Metamucil mainly for reducing the cholesterol levels.  You may be surprised to learn this but this is a fact.  Before we go into the reason how this is possible let me try to explain a little bit more about cholesterol.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is an essential part of our cells in the body and it is required for may functions which include secretion of certain hormones, bile secretion etc.  The maintain the cellular membrane and they are produced by each cell in the body.  Cholesterol circulate in the blood.  When the cholesterol is produced in more quantities it starts depositing on the walls of the arteries and gradually clogs it.  This can cause two problems.  Artery hardens and loses its flexibility and narrowing of the artery.  Over time the artery clogs up and it can lead to hear attack or cardio vascular diseases.

There are two types of cholesterol which are present in our body.  LDL(Low Density Lipoprotein) and HDL(High Density Lipoprotein).  When you hear your doctor talking about these two terms or read about these two terms in your blood report think this way - L for Lousy or bad and H for Healthy.  I mean LDL is the bad cholesterol and HDL is the good cholesterol.

If you have lesser LDL and higher HDL then your cholesterol ratio will be good and healthy.  If on the other hand your LDL is more and HDL is less then you have a bad cholesterol problem.  However remember that quantity for measuring high or low is different in case of LDL and HDL.

Role of Metamucil in Reducing Cholesterol Levels

The extra cholesterol is excreted from the bile and dumped into the intestine.  From there normally the body will reabsorb the cholesterol and recycle it.  If you have metamucil before having food the bile which is produced by the body will mix with the psyllium fiber present in the bile and absorbed in it.  Since metamucil helps in clearing the bowels when the cholesterol also get removed easily from the body along with the fibers in metamucil.  This is how metamucil helps in maintaining cholesterol levels.

Some Other Great Foods For Maintaining the Cholesterol Ratio

Foods which are good at maintaining the healthy cholesterol levels are those which contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.  These are plant based foods such as avocado, coconut and flax seeds.  So include these in more quantities in your food and accelerate the healthy cholesterol levels in your body.
